The year is 1999, and the 20th century is not the only thing coming to an end. He lives with his mom and Grandpa Harry at Grandpa Harry’s house, which, as Grandpa Harry says, looks old on the outside, but its soul is forever young. Lance doesn’t know what he means by that, but he does spend most of his time out in the garage jamming with him (Lance plays drums- Grandpa Harry plays bass)—but it is the furthest thing from cool. Jazz is Grandpa Harry’s religion- and all Lance really wants to do is rock out. Wayne, Lance’s best friend, makes them a trio- he plays trumpet, but is actually more of a guitarist. He plays that thing as often as other dudes masturbate—he can even play the solo in “Stairway”. Basically, he and Lance could totally start the greatest band in rock n’ roll history—except that Grandpa Harry will never let that happen, not in that garage, anyway. At school, Lance and Wayne are on the lowest rung of the social ladder, and don’t seem to have any hope of rising up- they are constantly the victims of the sadism of Samson DiBaggio and his goons, who they can’t ever escape from for very long, but they are invisible to girls like Lila Duvall, who they can only admire from a distance. Music, as lame as it might be, is the only thing they have going for them. As much as Lance wishes things would change, when the changes actually do begin happening, nothing will ever be the same, and, as Lance finds out—that’s not necessarily as great as it sounds.
